First Impressions: A Serious Espresso Machine That Doesn't Take Over Your Counter

Most home espresso machines force a choice: go compact and settle for mediocre shots, or go all-in on a full-size machine that eats half your counter. The De'Longhi EC885.M Dedica Arte splits the difference in a way that's genuinely rare in this price bracket. It's built for people who want to learn real espresso technique — steaming milk, pulling proper shots, maybe even attempting latte art — without needing a dedicated coffee station. If you've been eyeing prosumer machines but can't justify the space or the price jump, this is the machine built for exactly that itch.

Design and Build: Stainless Steel in a Genuinely Small Footprint

The Dedica Arte's headline trick is its width. At under 15cm wide and 30cm deep, it slots into a gap on the counter that most espresso machines can't touch — think somewhere between a toaster and a stand mixer in terms of footprint. The body is stainless steel rather than painted plastic, which matters more than it sounds: it resists fingerprints and water spots better over years of daily use, and it simply looks and feels like a more expensive appliance than its price suggests.

That said, the compact build comes with a trade-off multiple owners have flagged: the machine is light. When you're locking a full portafilter into place or tamping with any force, it can shift slightly on the counter unless it's braced against a wall or backsplash. It's a minor annoyance rather than a dealbreaker, and a rubber grip mat or a fixed spot against a wall solves it entirely — but it's worth knowing before you buy, especially if your counter space is open on all sides.

Up top sits a plate designed to keep your espresso cups warm using residual heat from the machine itself — a small but genuinely useful detail, since a cold cup is one of the fastest ways to kill the crema and aroma on a fresh shot. It's a passive feature (no separate heating element to switch on), so don't expect steaming-hot cups after just a few minutes; it works best if you leave your cups sitting there between brews.

Brewing Performance: What 15-Bar Pressure and Thermoblock Heating Actually Mean for Your Cup

The spec sheet lists 15 bar pump pressure and Thermoblock heating, but here's what that translates to at 6am on a work day. Thermoblock technology heats water on demand through a small heating element rather than storing hot water in a large internal boiler. The upside is speed: this machine gets to brewing temperature in a fraction of the time a full boiler system needs, so there's no standing around for ten minutes waiting for a warm-up light. The trade-off, which matters more to enthusiasts than beginners, is that back-to-back drinks (say, two cappuccinos in a row) can show a touch of temperature drift compared to dual-boiler machines costing several times as much — not a flaw, just a category limitation worth knowing about if you're comparing this to machines twice its price.

The 15-bar pump is higher than the roughly 9 bars that espresso extraction actually needs, which is standard practice across this class of machine — the extra headroom is there to guarantee consistent pressure delivery through the portafilter rather than to imply "more pressure equals more flavour." Paired with the pressurized double-walled filter baskets that ship with the machine, it's genuinely forgiving of grind inconsistency, which is exactly what you want as a beginner still dialing in a grinder. Reviewers consistently describe the resulting shots as rich, with a nut-brown crema that holds up well — a strong sign the pressure and heating are working together as intended rather than compensating for one or the other.

One standout convenience: the automatic flow stop. Instead of eyeballing your shot and guessing when to cut it off, the machine is calibrated to stop dispensing once it reaches a set volume, taking the guesswork out of portioning single and double shots consistently. It's a small thing that removes a surprising amount of daily friction, especially in the first few weeks of ownership.

The My LatteArt Steam Wand: A Real Barista Tool, With a Real Learning Curve

This is the feature that separates the Dedica Arte from entry-level pod machines, and it's also the one that generates the most polarized feedback. The steam wand here is manual and modeled on commercial equipment, not the automated frothing wands or panarello-style attachments found on beginner machines. That means you control the milk texture entirely by hand — angle, depth, timing — which is precisely how professional baristas build the microfoam needed for proper latte art.

The honest trade-off: this is a skill, not a button press. Multiple owners report needing several attempts before producing silky microfoam rather than large, uneven bubbles, and a few mention going to online tutorials to shorten that learning curve. If you want a machine where you press one button and get consistent foam every time, this isn't it — the Breville Bambino Plus and similar auto-steam machines exist for that use case. But if you're willing to invest a week or two of practice, the payoff is real: it's a wand capable of proper latte art on a machine this size and price, which is a meaningfully rare combination.

Ground Coffee, ESE Pods, or Both: Built-In Flexibility

The Dedica Arte doesn't force you into a single format. It ships with three filter baskets — single shot, double shot, and one specifically shaped for E.S.E. pods — so you can start with pre-portioned pods on day one and graduate to freshly ground coffee once you're comfortable, or simply use whichever suits your morning depending on time and mood.

Format Best for What you get
Ground coffee (single basket) Precision, one cup at a time Full control over dose and tamp pressure
Ground coffee (double basket) Two cups, or a stronger single serving Higher intensity, better for milk-based drinks
E.S.E. pods Speed and consistency, zero mess Pre-measured, no grinder needed

The included stainless steel tamper and milk jug round out the accessory set, meaning there's no immediate need to buy add-ons just to get started — a genuine value point compared to machines that nickel-and-dime you on accessories after purchase.

In terms of what you can actually make, the machine covers the full espresso-based menu: straight espresso, ristretto, lungo, americano, cappuccino, latte, latte macchiato, and flat white, plus a hot water function for tea or Americanos built at the tap rather than through the group head.

Living With It Day to Day

The water tank holds 1.1 litres, which in practical terms is enough for roughly a handful of drinks before a refill, depending on cup size — comfortable for a household of one or two people making their daily coffee, though a larger family hosting guests will find themselves topping it up more often than with bigger machines. It's transparent with a level gauge, so you'll see the water dropping before the machine ever complains about it, and it lifts out cleanly for refilling at the sink rather than requiring you to pour awkwardly into a fixed tank.

The cup stand adjusts to accommodate mugs up to 10cm tall, which covers everything from a small espresso cup to a reasonably tall travel mug or latte glass — genuinely useful if your household drinks a mix of straight shots and larger milk drinks rather than one or the other.

Cleanup is where the Dedica Arte quietly earns its keep. The drip tray lifts out for emptying and rinsing, the filter baskets and other loose parts are dishwasher safe, and the machine flags you with a descale warning rather than leaving you to guess when mineral buildup is becoming a problem — a small but meaningful nudge toward keeping the internals healthy over the long run, especially in hard water areas. The included descaling solution and cleaning tool mean you're equipped to handle that maintenance from day one, without a separate purchase.

Auto shut-off kicks in after 15 minutes of inactivity, which is aggressive compared to machines that run for an hour or more before powering down. It's a sensible default for saving electricity between uses, though if you tend to linger over breakfast and come back for a second espresso later, you may find yourself re-triggering the warm-up sequence more often than you'd like.

Who This Machine Is Actually For

The Dedica Arte is built for a specific kind of buyer: someone stepping up from a pod machine or drip coffee maker who wants to actually learn espresso technique — tamping, dialing in shots, steaming milk by hand — without committing counter space or budget to a full prosumer setup. It particularly suits smaller kitchens, apartments, offices, or anyone who values a stainless-steel, compact aesthetic over a bulkier machine with more bells and whistles.

It's a poor fit, on the other hand, for two types of buyers. First, anyone who wants push-button simplicity above all else — if manually texturing milk sounds like a chore rather than a skill worth learning, an automatic steam wand machine will serve you better from day one. Second, high-volume households or small offices making drink after drink back-to-back; the Thermoblock system and 1.1-litre tank are sized for personal or small-household use, not for serving a stream of guests or colleagues without pauses to reheat and refill.

How It Stacks Up Against the Alternatives

At this size and price point, the Dedica Arte's most relevant competition comes from two directions: machines that automate more of the process, and machines that offer more manual control at the cost of convenience.

Breville Bambino Plus

Against the Breville Bambino Plus, the trade-off is automation versus authenticity. The Bambino Plus automates milk texturing entirely, which is faster and more consistent for someone who just wants a good latte without practicing technique. The Dedica Arte trades that convenience for a genuine barista-style wand capable of real latte art, at the cost of a learning curve.

Gaggia Classic Pro

Against the Gaggia Classic Pro, the trade-off runs the other way. The Classic Pro is prized in the enthusiast community for its commercial-style group head and its potential for aftermarket upgrades (better portafilters, PID temperature controllers, and so on) — but it comes with none of the Dedica Arte's automatic flow stop or footprint advantages, and it demands more hands-on attention to get right. The Dedica Arte sits deliberately in between: more capable and more authentic than a fully automated machine, but easier to live with day to day than a machine built primarily for tinkerers.

The Honest Trade-offs

The strongest case for the Dedica Arte is the combination it pulls off: a stainless-steel build with genuine barista-style features — a proper steam wand, pressurized double-wall baskets, automatic flow stop — all inside a footprint that fits kitchens where a full-size machine simply wouldn't. The fast Thermoblock heat-up and inclusion of a tamper, milk jug, and multiple filter baskets mean you're brewing real espresso within minutes of unboxing, with no separate accessory purchases required.

The honest downsides cluster around two things. First, the manual steam wand is a skill investment, not a convenience feature — if you're not willing to practice, you'll be frustrated rather than delighted in the first couple of weeks. Second, while the majority of ownership experiences are strongly positive, a minority of reviewers have reported build quality inconsistencies, including a steam wand failure and a water leak reported by long-term owners, alongside comments that customer service resolution wasn't always smooth. These appear to be the exception rather than the rule based on the volume of positive feedback, but it's fair to flag that quality control hasn't been universally perfect, and the 2-year manufacturer's guarantee is worth registering and holding onto.

Final Verdict

If you want to learn real espresso-making — proper shots, hand-steamed milk, the possibility of latte art — without giving up counter space or paying prosumer prices, the Dedica Arte is a genuinely strong pick, and the flexibility to use ground coffee or ESE pods interchangeably makes it forgiving of how your routine changes over time. Buy it if you're willing to spend a week or two practicing the steam wand and you value the compact stainless-steel design. Look elsewhere — toward something like the Breville Bambino Plus — if fully automated milk texturing matters more to you than the process of learning it by hand.

Honest outlook

Ex-barrista

I bought this about a month ago, after reading a lot of reviews. I have found that, as long as you follow the instructions on setting up with the correct temperature and pour rate, you can get the shots and crema you're wanting. It is important to try different coffee types to see which works best for you. I have found that Lavazza ground coffee works quite well.

The steam wand is great. It is a different type to the old style of machine and is more in line with the classic coffee shop style. It is more challenging to use than their old style and if you haven't used one like this before, it will take some extra time to get the knack down.

To get hot milk, it takes some time to heat correctly, you have to continue it past when you can touch the metal of the jug. If you like it a bit cooler, then you will definitely get the drink you want without too much trial and error.

It's a small machine which takes up little space and you can have on the side without it impacting too much. Doesn't take long to heat up, but sometimes if making multiple drinks I have had to switch it off between shots to get it to click back into heating properly. Only takes less than a minute, so while you're prepping the coffee for the next one it has time.

Overall a good purchase, the steam wand can struggle sometimes and I've had to turn the machine off and on again but then it's fine. You must make sure to wipe it properly after every use and "purge" after (turn it on without being in liquid, facing the tray) to clear out excess milk and keep it in a good working order.

I'd say great for a beginner if you're patient, and makes the cup of coffee I always want to be made in cafes.

A great manual espresso machine

I bought this Dedica Arte to replace an original Dedica that started leaking after several years of use averaging 4 cups a day. There's a learning curve to steam milk for a flat white but once achieved this machine gives a coffee equivalent to most coffee shops.
During the life of my original Dedica the steam wand disintegrated and I replaced it with a rancilio silvia steam wand which much improved the machine. This was the reason I went for the Arte as it appeared to have a similar wand. There was a shorter learning curve but I think getting consistent results from one cup to the next is a little harder, though it's early days.
It's a very good machine if you are happy to practice being a barista! As a tip, I find it best, with this steam wand, to completely submerge it, turn on the steam, then slowly lower the jug until the screaming noise becomes a gentle 'rustle' and the milk is swirling in the jug.
The Arte has other improvements over the original Dedica. The coffee basket is deeper making it much easier to add two scoops of coffee and tamp it down. A sensible tamper is provided that gives a visual indication that the correct amount of coffee was added. A stainless steel jug is also included for milk steaming.

Great coffee from the comfort of your own home.

This is a great machine for someone who doesn't have much counter space but wants a nice barista style coffee. Its slimline, but consequently not as sturdy as bigger machines.
There is trio of buttons on the front that cover the basics: single shot, double shot and one to control the built-in steam wand. While the machine does come with two filters, suited for single and double shots, it can be quite difficult to squeeze these into the main handle but I suspect this will loosen up over time. The steam wand is also quite noisy, but I am unsure if this is my frothing technique, so I will continue to practice!

The back of the Dedica holds just over 1 litre of water and you can remove the drip tray to accommodate larger mugs if needed. A downside for me is that it does not come with anything to froth your milk in, I would have expected a metal jug type thing. It does however come with a descaler, which is good for hard water areas like ours. It also comes with a two year warranty which is always a good sign of a company backing their product.

A Compact Powerhouse for Coffee Lovers

After using the product for a few weeks, I can confidently say it’s one of the best compact espresso machines I’ve owned. Its slim profile fits perfectly in my small kitchen without sacrificing performance. Within minutes of setup, I was pulling rich, creamy shots of espresso that rival what I get at my local café.

What impressed me most was the professional-style steam wand. It takes a little practice, but I’ve been able to make silky micro-foam for lattes and cappuccinos at home. I now make an oat milk cappuccino that my wife says tastes as good as the one they make in a specialty coffee shop.

Cleanup is also simple. The removable drip tray and water tank make maintenance easy, and I appreciate that it doesn't require much counter space or complicated descaling routines.

If you’re looking for a home espresso machine that offers serious barista-level results without the bulk or high price tag of professional machines, the EC885.M is a smart investment.

Disappointing quality drop

I have had a Dedica for many years. The Dedica is limited but perfect for my needs, so when I needed a replacement, my old one had a good run of about 5 years... I replaced it like for like, I collected my new silver Dedica. The coffee scoop/ tamper was missing from the package and the drip tray, instead of being silver/chrome is some kind of sage green. In addition the metal filter which is inserted into the filter basket, is so tightly fitted, it is impossible to remove and therefore clean. I have had to use parts of my old machine to make this purchase functional and aesthetically sound. Pure stress limitation and time constraints have prevented me from returning it. I am disappointed, it seems there is a lack of quality control at the some point in the production process which ultimately spoils the customer experience and pleasure of making a new purchase.

Great but not perfect

Had my eye on this machine for a while, and am glad I bought it. For the price, the quality is very good. However, there are a few small issues. First, the water tank is very small, though that is to be expected from such a compact machine. If you’re tight on space or just don’t fancy a huge, heavy machine sat on your counter, this is the right machine for you. The biggest issue for me is how the filter fits the handle - when trying to knock the used grounds into the bin, the filter inevitably falls out too. I’ve not experienced this issue on other machines, so although it’s not the end of the world, it is a drawback worth being aware of. A simple Google will show you this is a common issue with this machine. All that said and done, I am pleased with my purchase and would recommend this machine!

Milk frother lets it down

I bought this to replace my Delonghi Dedica Style - I chose this Arte model as it seemed to be an upgrade of the Style model and it had among the top ratings on Which. However , although it made the coffee itself OK, I found the new milk frother impossible to get on with. Maybe it works ok for lattes or other quite long milky drinks but for me (I mainly make espresso macchiato or cappuccino) it just failed to deliver the right level of froth. After a week of watching YouTube experts showing how to use the frother it stilI basically delivered hot milk very marginally thickened. At this point I gave up and had to return it. Instead I have bought another Style model with the original milk frother - perfect coffee every time.

Outstanding coffee

I’ve had a few coffee machines in the past and this one is by far the best. I drink a lot of cups a day and finding the right method hasn’t worked out that well before with other brands.
It’s a long process to setup but once it’s cleaned through and completed the cycles you get the hang of it.
The coffee produced is so smooth and the milk frother is really easy to use, making it taste like you’ve ordered in a coffee shop.
It also looks great in the kitchen and considering it’s capability doesn’t take up much bench space.
It’s definitely at the top end of machine and if you don’t want to spend a fortune on one that grinds the beans then this is the best option.

Solid espresso machine

The Dedica has worked well as my first espresso machine so far. It is nice and slim so fits well in a smaller kitchen. The coffee tastes great and the milk frother works a charm. The only downsides would be no dual-boiler although this has not caused me issues as the boiler will heat up / cool down very quickly between coffee extraction and steaming. Also, something I overlooked initially was that the Dedica comes with a 51mm pressurised portafilter basket which is not ideal if you want to precisely dial-in your espresso but works well for me as a beginner barista, although you can always buy a separate one if you really want that feature.

Nice looking coffee machine

Nice looking coffee machine but that’s about as far as it goes for me , it’s a lot of faffing about just for a cup of coffee, i usually only drink coffee first thing in the morning when I’m rushing out the door to get to work , if you’re the same as me then this isn’t the machine for you . It’s relatively easy to use and the instructions are pretty straight forward but it doesn’t come with a built in grinder which I would have expected as standard , therefore you have to either buy a separate grinder or buy pre ground beans which kind of defeats the whole idea of buying an espresso machine in my opinion .

Box contents was not the same as product descibed

I bought this coffee machine as the product description mentioned that it came with several accessories together with the De'Longhi Descaler. However, after I collected the machine and checked. The Descaler was not included in the package box. I tried to check with their shop's customer service. They only offer me either return the machine or I should contact De'Longhi customer service by myself. It seems that their product description page was misleading customers and they didn't help me to get back the descaler.

Steam wand requires practice!

I bought this to replace on older Dedica with a panarello steam wand, which was pretty foolproof until the pump gave out. Like a previous reviewer, I had to resort to online videos to the technique for using the 'pro' wand on this model, and am hoping practice makes perfect! It is largely similar to the old machine but sorely lacking in instructions, with only a pictoral guide, so I am glad I have kept the old instruction booklet. As ever it is a stylish espresso maker that makes a decent cup of coffee.

Nice coffee but temperamental

We replaced our cheaper DelonghiEspresso with the Dedica Arte Espresso and noted an improvement in our coffee. It's simple to use, however we are a large family and it can only manage 2 cups before overheating, leading to erratic performance of steam wand. It's fine for regular use, but not times of increased demand like ours, or a dinner party. Note we live in a hard water area, the machine helpfully lets us know when to descale using its inbuilt programme (for us monthly)

Decent espresso at last

In a completely different league than my previous 2 non de'longhi espresso machines. Consistently good brews with no fuss. Also great build quality and the portafilter has a good heft to it unlike other machines. I am still refining my technique and ground coffee varieties so more improvement to be had. I would recommend this machine over more budget options as the extra money has definitely improved the experience.

Good coffee slimline machine

I have had the coffee machine for a few weeks now. I purchased it because it’s slimline and fits well next to kettle. It doesn’t take up too much space. I had tasted the coffee from this machine at a friend house so I know it’s excellent. The jug is a little too small. But the bigger jug doesn’t fit under the steamer. It’s easy to keep clean and not very messy when making the coffee.

Excellent compact espresso machine

Bought this 2 weeks ago, all good so far. Heats up quickly, produces great coffee. Can remove the drip tray and dispense coffee into a mug if you prefer. I haven't used the steam wand as I use a separate milk warmer to make a Flat White. Can be a bit tricky to change the filter cup in the filter arm (portafilter), but not too difficult with practice. Very pleased with my choice.

Great Value for the money!

This is my second time owning this machine, albeit this model has the more professional frother-wand. Totally worth the extra bit of cash. The machine heats very quickly and makes a delicious espresso for use in all your favorite drinks like Cappucinos and lattes. Delonghi just builds a great product that lasts and cannot be beaten for the price!

Delonghi coffee machine

I have been using this coffee maker for 2 weeks now and it does make great coffee, a specially espresso which produces a rich creamy foam! The only issues I have are the instructions are very basic and the online ones could be better to. However I am very happy with the design and easy of use once you have worked out how to use coffee machine.

patel Nov 2, 2022

Compact, practical and best in class coffee machin

The build is very strong and sturdy, very well built - can't fault on look either.
Grip on the table is strong, Operating it is very easy
The steam pressure is really impressive.
It got two containers to make either one or two espressos - the taste is very nice and different.
All components are made of steel
It also comes with descaler liquid.

Good buy

This is a fantastic coffee machine for the price. The only issue with this machine is that when you press the steam button and finish milk frothing, you cannot go back to make your next coffee, and by pressing any other button, it goes for setting, and you either need to do the setting again or turn it off and on again to make another coffee.
