De'Longhi Magnifica Evo ECAM290.83.TB
De'longhiBuying a bean-to-cup machine is really a bet on a habit. You're deciding that grinding fresh beans every morning, rather than dropping a pod in a slot, is worth the extra counter space and the slightly steeper price tag. The De'Longhi Magnifica Evo ECAM290.83.TB is aimed squarely at people making that bet for the first time — or upgrading from a machine that never quite nailed the milk. It removes almost every manual step between "I want a coffee" and "I'm drinking a coffee," while still grinding each cup from whole beans. The question worth answering before you spend £500-plus is whether that convenience actually translates into coffee you'd choose over a café's. Having pulled apart what this machine does mechanically and what real owners report after months of daily use, here's where it earns its keep — and where it doesn't.
Design and Build: Compact, Sturdy, and Genuinely Kitchen-Friendly
The Magnifica Evo is built to disappear into a normal kitchen rather than dominate it. At roughly 36cm tall, 24cm wide, and 44cm deep, it occupies about the same footprint as a large toaster oven turned on its side — narrow enough for most worktops, but you'll want to check headroom above, since the bean hopper and water tank are top-loaded. The titanium-and-black finish, with a brushed, matte metallic panel rather than a shiny chrome one, reads as understated rather than flashy, which means it tends to blend into contemporary kitchens instead of demanding attention the way some stainless-steel machines do.
Weighing close to 9.5kg, it has enough heft to feel planted during operation rather than rattling across the counter, and the plastic body panels — while not the metal shell you'd get on a machine costing twice as much — feel appropriate for the price bracket. The control panel is a small colour display with soft-touch icons for each drink, which is a meaningful usability decision: instead of memorising which combination of buttons makes a latte macchiato versus a cappuccino, you press the icon that matches the drink you want. Owners who've lived with it day-to-day consistently point to this as one of its best everyday touches — there's no manual to consult after the first use.
The water tank is transparent with a visible level gauge, so you can check remaining capacity at a glance rather than guessing or being caught out mid-brew. It lifts out from the top for refilling, and the drip tray beneath the spouts is removable and dishwasher-safe, along with several other touchpoints. One practical limitation worth flagging: the bean hopper itself is fixed rather than a swappable, lift-out unit, so switching between two different bean types on the fly (say, a decaf blend for evenings) isn't as instant as on some pricier rivals — though the machine does let you bypass the hopper entirely and brew from pre-ground coffee instead, which solves the same problem a different way.
How It Actually Makes Coffee: Grinder, Pump, and Heating System
Underneath the friendly display sits the machinery that determines whether your coffee tastes like a café shot or dishwater with foam on top, and this is where the Magnifica Evo's mid-range positioning shows its logic clearly.
The Grinder
A single integrated conical burr grinder handles every bean-based drink, with 13 adjustable settings running from fine (for concentrated espresso) to coarse (for a milder, longer coffee). Burr grinders are the meaningful dividing line in this category — they crush beans between two revolving surfaces for a consistent particle size, unlike cheap blade grinders that chop unevenly and produce inconsistent extraction. Thirteen settings is a genuinely useful range for home use: enough to dial in a noticeably different result for a light Ethiopian roast versus a darker Italian blend, without the paralysis-inducing granularity that some enthusiast machines offer. The trade-off, echoed across owner reviews, is that grinding is the noisiest few seconds of the whole process — audible for roughly five to ten seconds per cup, which matters if your kitchen opens onto a bedroom or you're making an early coffee while others sleep.
The Pump
A 15-bar pump pressure pushes water through the coffee puck at a rate designed to properly extract oils and crema rather than just passing hot water through the grounds. For context, most domestic machines that produce genuine espresso-style crema sit somewhere between 9 and 19 bar; 15 bar is comfortably in the range that produces a proper, thick crema layer rather than a thin, watery one — well above what a basic filter machine or capsule system typically manages.
The Heating
Instead of a boiler that heats a reserve of water and then waits to reheat between cups, the Thermoblock system heats water on demand as it flows through, which means less waiting between drinks and a more consistent temperature at the point of extraction — a common source of inconsistency on cheaper machines, where the first cup after startup can taste noticeably different from the third. At 1450 watts, it draws a moderate amount of power for this category; enough to bring water to temperature quickly without being unusually power-hungry to run daily.
Put together, independent hands-on testing of this line has generally found the espresso extraction consistent and clearly ahead of pod machines and cheaper automatics, even if it doesn't quite match a dedicated speciality-café setup — which is a fair and honest way to think about where this machine sits.
LatteCrema, MyLatte, and the Milk Side of the Equation
For a lot of buyers, milk drinks are the entire point of owning a bean-to-cup machine, and this is where the Magnifica Evo differentiates itself most clearly from cheaper alternatives. The LatteCrema System automatically draws milk from an included carafe, froths it, and dispenses it at a controlled temperature — producing a dense, fine-bubbled microfoam rather than the airy, loose foam that manual steam wands often produce in inexperienced hands. In practical terms, this is the difference between foam that collapses within a minute and foam that holds its texture long enough to actually finish your drink. It works with both dairy and plant-based milks, which matters given how common oat and soya milk have become in daily coffee routines.
MyLatte Function
A standout feature within this system is the MyLatte function, which lets you dial in exactly how much milk goes into your drink rather than accepting a fixed, one-size-fits-all pour. This solves a specific, common frustration: automatic milk systems that either drown a small cup in foam or leave a large mug looking half-empty. Being able to adjust the milk volume to match the cup you're actually using is a small design decision that pays off daily.
It's worth being candid, though, that milk-drink results in this category are never perfectly uniform across users — some owners report the cappuccino setting leaning more toward froth than balanced milk-to-coffee ratio out of the box, and a minority found the auto-dispensed foam didn't match their personal preference for a classic cappuccino texture. The adjustability helps here: strength, milk volume, and cup size can all be tuned rather than accepted as fixed, and most reported dissatisfaction improves once owners spend a session or two adjusting settings to taste rather than using the defaults.
The Feature Set That Actually Matters Day to Day
Beyond the headline grinder-and-milk combination, several smaller features shape how pleasant this machine is to live with:
Seven one-touch recipes covering espresso, cappuccino, latte, americano, lungo (a longer black coffee), iced coffee, and latte macchiato — enough range to cover a household's typical drink preferences without the machine becoming needlessly complex to navigate.
Dual-cup brewing, so you can pull two espressos simultaneously rather than making one person wait while the other's coffee brews — a genuinely useful feature for couples or shared households.
Ground coffee compatibility alongside whole beans, meaning a houseguest who wants decaf, or you fancying a different blend for one cup, doesn't require draining and refilling the bean hopper.
Dedicated hot water function, useful for tea drinkers or for stretching an espresso into an Americano — a detail cheaper machines sometimes skip.
A cup warmer on top of the unit, which keeps cups at serving temperature so your espresso doesn't hit cold ceramic and lose heat immediately.
An adjustable cup stand that raises or lowers to accommodate anything from a small espresso cup to a tall travel mug, avoiding the common bean-to-cup problem of spouts positioned too high for smaller cups and splashing.
Living With It: Maintenance and Everyday Upkeep
A machine that grinds fresh beans and handles dairy milk daily lives or dies on how easy it is to keep clean, and this is an area where the Magnifica Evo is deliberately designed to reduce friction. It includes an automatic cleaning and descaling cycle, along with a warning indicator that alerts you when descaling is due rather than leaving you guessing based on how the coffee tastes. The included water filter reduces limescale buildup and improves flavour consistency, particularly in hard-water areas — and while it isn't strictly mandatory to run the machine, skipping it means you'll need to descale more frequently to keep performance steady. A water hardness test strip is included in the box specifically so you can calibrate the machine's internal settings to your local water supply from day one, which is a small but meaningful detail that affects both taste and long-term reliability.
The unit also auto-shuts-off after a period of inactivity, which is a sensible default for both energy use and peace of mind if you're the type to forget appliances are on. Drip tray, milk carafe, and other touchpoints are removable and largely dishwasher-safe, and the brewing unit itself can be pulled out from the front for periodic cleaning — a feature that matters because internal grime is the single biggest cause of stale-tasting coffee and machine faults over time, far more than the coffee itself. The box also includes an EcoDecalk descaling solution to get you started without an immediate extra purchase.
Who This Machine Is Actually For
This machine makes the most sense for a fairly specific — but common — kind of buyer:
Good fit if you:
- Drink one to four coffees a day and want genuine bean-ground freshness without any barista skill or manual steaming involved
- Regularly make milk-based drinks (cappuccino, latte, flat white-style pours) and are tired of inconsistent foam from cheaper machines or capsule systems
- Live in a shared household or with a partner and want two coffees on the go without doubling the wait
- Value a display and control layout you can hand to a guest without a tutorial
Probably not the right choice if you:
- Want full manual control over tamping, dosing, and pulling shots — this is an automatic machine, and the trade-off for its convenience is reduced hands-on customisation compared to a semi-automatic espresso machine
- Need near-silent operation for an open-plan space where grinding noise during an early or late brew would be disruptive
- Want to keep two very different bean types loaded and swap between them instantly, since the bean hopper isn't a quick-swap design
- Are shopping well under £350 — this machine sits in the mid-to-upper price bracket for the category, and a basic filter machine or capsule system will always be cheaper upfront
How It Stacks Up Against the Alternatives
| Machine | Strengths | Trade-offs vs. Magnifica Evo |
|---|---|---|
| De'Longhi Magnifica Evo ECAM290.83.TB | 13 grind settings, dense LatteCrema microfoam, dual-cup brewing, ground-coffee compatibility, straightforward icon-based controls | Fixed (non-swappable) bean hopper; noticeable grinder noise |
| Philips 5400 Series | Quieter grinding, very easy-to-clean LatteGo milk system, similarly priced | Lower coffee dose per shot (around 8-9g vs. this machine's roughly 12g) produces a milder, less concentrated espresso |
| De'Longhi Rivelia | Swappable bean hoppers, touchscreen interface, more grind settings | Noticeably higher price; grinder noise is a similar or greater concern |
| Sage Barista Express (manual/semi-auto) | Full manual control over tamping and extraction for enthusiasts | Requires learning a skill and daily manual milk steaming — the opposite convenience trade-off |
| Entry-level bean-to-cup (sub-£350) | Lower upfront cost | Weaker or absent automatic milk systems, less consistent grind quality, shorter expected lifespan |
The clearest way to think about this machine's position: it sits above the entry-level tier where grinders and milk systems are genuinely compromised, and below the premium tier (De'Longhi Rivelia, Jura models, Sage's assisted-espresso machines) where you pay meaningfully more for touchscreen interfaces, swappable hoppers, or barista-guided assistance. For most households that just want reliably good coffee without fuss, that middle position is exactly where you want to be shopping.
The Honest Trade-Offs
The case for this machine is strong, but it isn't flawless, and it's worth being direct about both sides rather than glossing over the weak points.
Where It Wins
On the strength side, the combination of a genuinely adjustable burr grinder, a pump pressure capable of proper crema, and an automatic milk system that produces real microfoam rather than bubbly froth is a meaningfully better package than anything at the entry-level price point offers. The everyday usability details — the icon-based display, the adjustable cup stand, the auto-shutoff, the descale warning — add up to a machine that rarely surprises you with an inconvenience. And the flexibility to use ground coffee alongside beans is a practical touch that solves the "what about decaf" problem elegantly.
Where It Falls Short
On the weaker side, the grinding noise is real and consistently mentioned by owners, even if it's brief. The fixed bean hopper means committed two-bean households will find themselves either compromising on one blend or occasionally topping up mid-week rather than swapping cleanly. And while the majority of feedback on milk-drink quality is positive, a minority of users find the default cappuccino and latte settings favour foam over balance, which means expecting café-perfect results straight out of the box — with zero adjustment — may leave you disappointed for the first few uses. This machine rewards a little patience during setup; it doesn't reward buyers looking for zero-learning-curve perfection on day one.
The Verdict
The De'Longhi Magnifica Evo ECAM290.83.TB earns its place as one of the more sensible mid-range bean-to-cup purchases available right now. It solves the two things that actually matter in this category — grind quality and milk texture — competently and consistently, wraps them in a control system simple enough for a household to share without a manual, and backs it with genuinely useful daily-living touches like the adjustable cup stand, dual-cup brewing, and descale warnings.
Buy it if you're replacing a capsule machine or an ageing basic automatic and want a noticeable step up in both coffee quality and milk texture without moving into semi-professional, manual-skill territory or premium pricing. Look elsewhere — toward the Philips 5400 Series — if grinder noise during early mornings is a genuine deal-breaker for your household, or toward a semi-automatic machine like the Sage Barista Express if you actually want to learn and control the extraction process by hand. For everyone else who wants fresh, properly extracted coffee and real microfoam milk at the press of a button, this is a confident, well-rounded recommendation.
What People Say
98 commentsPerfect coffee every time!
Where do I start… this coffee machine is amazing! Honestly it has changed our life for the better. I had a pod coffee machine before this one and thought that was great but this blows that one out the water. It’s fabulous! It was very easy to set up and the instruction manual is easy to follow as it has the pictures showing you exactly what to do. The machine tells you when the water needs filling, when the ground beans need to be emptied and when more coffee needs to be added when using ground coffee. The frothed milk really makes the coffee taste top grade. It’s very easy to use and I love the fact that I can use as much or as little milk as I like with the ‘My Latte’ function as the machine will use however much milk is in there which I think is a great additional touch. On the milk frother it shows how much milk you will need for a certain coffee or even two of that coffee! You can have the milk attachment on for a milk based coffee or you can take it off and the machine has a hot water function too. This is great and saves you having to boil the kettle if your wanting a cup of tea but busy, the machine will do it all for you, all you have to do is choose the option you want on top. It’s very easy to fill with coffee beans on top of the machine and the ground coffee if your wanting to use that. When turning the machine on it pushes water through the pipes which is great as you know the water your getting is fresh from the filter. When you turn the machine off it flushes out the pipes so the after coffee water doesn’t sit in the pipes. I think this is great so you know each time the water is fresh and hasn’t been sat in the pipes while it’s not been used. I love the thought of this! Deciding whether you want a milder coffee or a stronger coffee is the hardest part about using this machine to make your coffee. You can choose the strength of your coffee and also how hot you want your coffee to be. You put your cup under, attach the milk if you want a milk based coffee and then make your choice and the machine does the rest. I didn’t believe I could have the ‘coffee shop’ feel and taste at home but I now have that, if not better with this machine! Being able to have a coffee without the price tag makes this machine even better value for money. I highly recommend this product to anybody looking for a coffee machine that’s easy to use, easy to maintain and makes an amazing cup of coffee at every use.
The perfect cup of coffee
The De’Longhi Magnifica Evo Bean to Cup Coffee Machine has completely transformed my coffee routine! This machine is a true gem for coffee enthusiasts who value convenience without compromising on quality.
First and foremost, the coffee it brews is exceptional. The flavor is rich, aromatic, and customizable to suit every preference. The integrated grinder allows me to enjoy the freshest coffee possible, and the adjustable settings let me tweak everything from grind size to coffee strength.
What sets the Magnifica Evo apart is its ease of use. The intuitive interface and one-touch functions make it simple to prepare a variety of beverages, from espresso to creamy cappuccinos. The milk frother is a standout feature—effortlessly producing silky foam for café-quality drinks.
Cleaning is surprisingly hassle-free, with a removable brew unit and automatic cleaning cycles that keep maintenance to a minimum. Plus, its sleek and compact design fits beautifully on my kitchen counter without taking up too much space.
Whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or just someone who enjoys a great cup of coffee at home, the De’Longhi Magnifica Evo is worth every penny. It delivers consistent quality, offers great versatility, and is incredibly user-friendly. Highly recommended!
Many settings to make the perfect coffee
Generally, a really good experience from the moment the machine arrived, extremely easy to set it up and start making coffee straight away. The buttons on the top give you a variety of different style coffees to try, ranging from latte’s, cappuccinos, espresso shots and even your own custom style coffee.
The more I got used to the machine the more adventurous I became with changing the settings and adjusting the latte setting to suit me, this can be done by a long hold on your chosen coffee button to adjust milk/ coffee ratio.
After each use the machine automatically purges hot water through to clean the lines out, except for the milk you must manually push the button for it to clean. The machine has many compartments all of which can be easily removed when it requires cleaning.
Pros:
The machine has many changeable settings to adjust the coffee to suit its end user
Easy to set up
Easy to clean
You can use both beans and ground coffee.
Makes the best coffee!
Cons:
It does take around 2-3 minutes to make a coffee.
The drip tray doesn’t hold much and requires emptying after 2-3 coffees.
You cannot use the milk frother on its own.
Different league Coffee
Wow wow wow !!! This machine in all its glory has just given me a whole new level in coffee preparation and has taken me a whole week to test fully so I can give this honest review . Stylish ,well made and weighty, easy to use ( instructions could be better however all on video format if needed ), this machine comes with numerous attachment to make various coffees which are all pictured on the display panel and are lit up which is a nice touch , removable milk bottle and frother , removable water tank , water filter, ph testing kit , descaling cleaning kit , drip tray and used coffee bean tray , coffee bean storage with settings for different grinding plus warning lights when machine needs cleaning, filter needs replacing and water low.comes from a premium brand in coffee machines and now had pride of place in my kitchen. Do not be fooled into buying inferior models you will be missing out on a premium product delivering a premium beverage .highly recommend this to anyone who takes their coffee seriously .
Great coffees in a minute!
This machine comes well packaged and the instructions for first setup are mainly in picture form so easy to follow, takes a little time to set up but worth it, several coffee choices, with or without milk added my favourite feature especially if you have friends round who like different coffees, espresso, latte, cappuccino or just an americano it’s all there, also lots of ways to personalise the drinks for size, strength and even the temperature of the water. From the press to a drink takes about 1 minute, can be made from beans or pre ground coffee following correct methods in the instructions, still working out my personal choice but each drink good so far, only downside is the hot water function, the spout is quite high(allowing for tall cups is good but…..) if using a smaller cup the water splashes from the cup during pouring, and this is hot water, although doesn’t splash far it can still get your hand if close by.
Velvety coffee, tastes amazing and would recommend
I've had this two days and can say it is the best coffee I have had. The machine is heavy and takes up space, but its a coffee machine with a grinder so don't expect it to be compact. It looks gorgeous sitting in the kitchen and your friends will be jealous. Down to the coffee, I've tried them all, and they're so tasty and like velvet as you drink. No longer will you have badly processed coffee, this is barrista quality every time. Also has a hot water function for tea drinkers such a versatile machine. It's a bit pricey but if you're a coffee fan then I'd fully recommend it because you will use this daily and it will pay for itself with your savings from drinking out.
De’Longhi Magnifica Evo Bean to Cup Coffee Machine
The De’Longhi Magnifica Evo is a sleek, user-friendly coffee machine that delivers consistently high-quality coffee. It grinds fresh beans for every cup and offers a range of options, from espressos to cappuccinos, with adjustable strength and temperature settings. The milk frother works brilliantly, creating creamy foam with ease.
Cleaning and maintenance are simple, with removable parts and helpful reminders for descaling. The only minor drawback is the water tank, which needs frequent refilling if you’re making multiple drinks.
At around £500, it’s a solid investment for anyone wanting café-quality coffee at home without the fuss. Highly recommended.
Misleading Argos product
I bought this machine recently and the first picture Argos use to promote the machine is the incorrect one. This machine doesn't have the Latte Machiatto option even though the first picture used shows it. Instead it has a steamed milk option which I personally wouldn't ever use. After calling customer services they agreed that I was misled and the best they could do was offer a £10 voucher (which never arrived). Ultimately the machine is fantastic, but just go careful with what you're ordering as Delonghi do have different drinks options for the Evo model.
Good but can be temperamental
Bought this a few weeks ago to replace an old Magnifico S. You need to download the full electronic manual as the paper one with pictures can be confusing and is limited. Milk system is a good idea and works most of the time. The first machine had to be returned as it didn’t detect the carafe was attached. It could do with being a little bigger for 2 lattes but with smaller cups it would be fine. Water tank needs filling often and drip tray fills up quite quick. In all, better than a manual milk frother and a bit of adjustment gets a good coffee.
Amazing coffee!!
Would be 4.5 starts but no option for that. Absolutely love this machine and my coffees every day. Great cappuccinos and lattes. Very easy to use, and keep clean. Although I did have a technical issue when I fist got the machine it reset by after turning off the machine and taking plug out of pocket for 20 mins. Other reason not 5 stars is that when used grind coffee rather than beans is that you need to remember to choose the grind option and that the coffee has properly gone down the shute.
Coffee machine is great!
Bought this because I was slowly going off Tassimo coffee and found shop prepared was so much nicer. I was spending too much going to Greggs! So told myself that I would stop spending £2.50 on a cup of coffee but make it at home. Well so far I have drunk A LOT more coffee but I’m not having to spend £5 a day. Easy to set up. Easy to clean. Running the regular clean cycles is so easy. Can change up the beans whenever I want if I want to try different flavours!
Excellent Beginner's Coffee Machine
Bought for my dad this Christmas and he loves it! Has features for adjusting and saving the amount of coffee-to-milk by holding down the coffee profile buttons, and the milk frothing bottle is superb, making our coffees taste just like the ones you get from coffee shops.
All in all, this is the perfect coffee machine for beginner coffee machine enthusiasts, with really easy set-up, and most importantly, good coffee that keeps you working through the night!
Perfect coffee;)
I had for the last 9 years delonghi which just broke. Decided to replace it with the same brand. I am perfectly happy w the new one. Nice coffee with the option of nice thick cappuccino which make me even happier. Also is few cm slimmer than my old one. I am really enjoying my morning coffee. Easy to set up and use, but the milk container need to be disassembled and properly cleaned quite often to make nice froth.
Not happy
Not happy with this machine, bought to replace a broken delonghi magnification evo which was a good machine for years, thinking it was the same machine but it has no latte macchiato function which I used alot, delonghi why did you take off that option, as soon as I can I will be replacing it, unfortunately I've only had a couple of weeks but threw the boxes so can't return, would not recommend this machine
Really great quality and features.
I have bought this a couple weeks ago and I haven't had any trouble with the coffee machine. The quality of the coffee and texture and creaminess of the lattes are just perfect. Five of my friends are already thinking of buying this coffee machine after coming over to my house for a cup of coffee and they weren't dissapointed at all. I would definetly recommend this product
to family and friends.
Great future
I do not recommend. I have been using it for 1 month. After each use of milk, the milk tank must be disassembled and washed. If you don't disassemble the milk tank, Cappuccino, Latte are not included... And you have to drink regular coffee without milk because you don't have time to assemble and disassemble. This is a lot of money for such a non-convenience. In general, the coffee is delicious.
Pleased with our purchase
Really pleased with our purchase- the paper instructions are useless, when we had downloaded then it was so much easier .Purchased this when it was on a really good discounted offer.Would highly recommend- the only downside is the milk frother, can't change the amount of froth..
Once you've played about with the machine you know exactly how you like your coffee and its easy
Great Coffee
Been using for approx 3 weeks - makes great coffee, it's hot and strength levels are good, the instructions are sadly lacking, thankful for YouTube!! Milk bottle a bit sensitive if you like skimmed milk, would rec you use semi/full milk with it as "heavier". Had an old Delonghi bean to cup which we used for years, never had a problem hence upgrading. Would recommend
Works very well, makes excellent cappucinos.
Its a great coffee machine. A little loud when grinding the beans. A little expensive in my opinion, as it only makes 2 types of coffee. It has 5 on the screen, but its only 2, just in different sizes. Cappucino and latte macchiato is the same, just with double milk. Espresso, coffee and long all 3 are black coffees just in different sizes. Easy to clean and use.
Just what i needed
I like the ease of use of this machine. I had one similar in office so bought this one for home. If you dont want to grind the beans separately and want all in one this is really good option. I haven't explored drinks menu much cause I prefer my latte option and add as much milk I need but if you want a quick coffee around the day this is a good choice.
