The experience of connecting to a Bluetooth device, switching between source devices, sound quality, and features has been a good justification of the expensive £270 price tag.
Connecting was painless, immediately found and accepted. Switching between laptop and phone is almost seamless. Although I do also believe this means other people who have connected before can also just connect randomly to your headset with no alert.
Active Noise Cancelling is tremendous, walked on an extremely busy street with car sounds, chatter, amongst other noise, and I only realised it was such a loud environment once I disabled the ANC feature.
Touch sensors are not too sensitive but also don't need you to whack the earcup. Quite balanced.
In terms of sound, I'm no audiophile but I can hear vocals clearly and crisp, while instruments and bass come out clearly and can be distinguished. Nothing drowns something else out. Granted all that, it's also not the most amazing headset I've had. Can still achieve similar results from much cheaper ones.
They are also not very heavy and I'm okay wearing them for pro-longed periods of time (3-4h). I even go jogging with them but I do tend to clean the earcup cushions after for sanitary reasons.
Beautiful design, unbeatable ANC and microphone
The design of these Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones is absolutely beautiful — the Smoky Pink colour is elegant, muted and unique. It’s not overly pink, just a chic, soft tone that looks luxurious and minimal. Every time I wear them, I get compliments.
Sound and ANC are outstanding — genuinely the best I’ve experienced. I used them on a 9-hour flight and couldn’t hear a thing. The adaptive noise control and “speak-to-chat” feature are brilliant for commuting and office use. The touch controls work perfectly (no accidental taps) and the ability to connect to multiple devices is seamless.
Comfort-wise, they’re incredibly lightweight with soft memory-foam cushions — I’ve worn them 12+ hours straight with zero pressure or fatigue. They fit both small and larger heads comfortably without slipping or clamping too tight.
They don’t fold like older models, but they sit flat in the case and travel well. Personally, not an issue — I prefer the slimmer, flatter case. Build quality feels solid despite being lightweight, and the mic performance is crystal clear even in wind.

AWFUL DONT BUY
I have had the whmx4’s for 4 years (2 pairs, one faulty after warranty, no coincidence)
Firstly the mx5’s are so poor. The 4’s are so much better in every way. In spin quality, feel and materials, comfort and most importantly NOISE CANCELLING!
These 5’s are APPAULING at noise cancelling honestly! I could hear every conversation on the train and the 4’s you can’t hear a thing.
Please save your money or buy the 4’s because the 5’s in my opinion are not good in any aspect, oh maybe one, they charge fast, but give it a year and that will go also.
The noise cancelling is really poor, you feel it’s not got noise cancelling, the hurt your ears after awhile, the fit isn’t good on the earcups as they are softer so not as compact as 4’s, they don’t fold, they feel cheap and flimsy and just over all a lot worse.
The sound isn’t any better either so literally paying for a worse product that the old ones.

Great headphones with one or two let downs.
Bought as an alternative to Bose headphones I had returned due to Bluetooth/iPhone connectivity issues. These work great, no issues moving from device to device. These sound doesn’t match what the Bose headphones offered but having made adjustments in the Sound Connect app it’s near as I need. I like the touch control on the outside of the RHS speaker, works well, and the other control buttons work easily. I find them reasonably comfortable to wear for a few hours, would have preferred a bit less weight. The big downside is that you can’t fold them a stick them in your pocket, not ideal if you need to remove them for a while such as if shopping etc.
Sonys xm5 saved my relationship
My husband snores really loudly it's not his fault he suffers with sleep apnea but it results I'm having many sleepless night and headaches from the loud noise that goes on for hours.
These head phones block out 90% of the sound and are very clear they are specifically designed to block out noises and up untill last week where cutting edge. While sony have released the xm6 they have a foldable design that previous version have had some issues with braking and such. I chose the xm5 as there tried and tested and when it comes to technology theses days tried and tested is the way to go.
Too Fragile - Design Fault
Very poor experience. These headphones are so fragile that if they aren’t kept in the case at all times when not in use, they can easily break. When I contacted Argos/Sony, they were completely unhelpful. I was required to pay to have the headphones assessed and then pay an excessive repair fee. After just two months of ownership, the product is now unusable. Online research shows many customers have experienced the same issue, indicating a clear design fault. Shame on Sony for selling such poorly designed products.
Great headset
Switched to headphones from AirPods when mine finally died. Have to say I much prefer it. Very comfy for long periods of use, noise cancellation is excellent as well as the ambient noise control so you don’t have to keep taking them on and off. I find the touch pad a little difficult to get right/use but that’s probably a me problem. The battery life is also excellent, I can use them for several days before I need to pop them on charge. Great purchase.
Great - but more fragile compared to WH1000XM4
I’m very happy with these headphones - though to be honest I can’t say they are any better than the previous incarnation. The only differences are that the annoying beep when bluetooth connects has been replaced with a softer chime… And physically, tthese headphones seem leas robust. I’m a little scared they are going to break each time I take them out of the carrying case. Having said that, I’ve used them for 6 months without any issues.
Good buy
I’ve had these a few weeks now and haven’t had to charge them yet so the battery life is excellent. I am finding the clarity great and I didn’t have noise cancellation on my old headphones so really noticing the difference.
My only issue is that they cut out whenever I speak and I can’t work out how to stop this. This is the only thing stopping me from giving them 5 stars. Oh and I love the colour.

It is a bit too big for my head personally, even with the tightest setting, it falls off if i move my head back / forth in great degree or quickly.

These are the best headphones I’ve ever owned. The external noise cancellation is outstanding, the connectivity, battery life and overall performance is excellent and although they look big, they are very light weight.

I’ve tried lots of pairs of lower priced headphones, but these Sony MX5 headphones are amazing. Noise cancelling on them is so good, and setting can all be changed using an app. The are so comfortable to wear and don’t cause any ear or head pain for me and I’m normally quiet sensitive!

I bought this last week . It very nice ,I love the colour ,I only charge it once and the battery last me for 2 days with 5hours of listening on and off. The downside was while travelling the bluetooth sometimes disconnected ,I updated it in the app but I haven’t use it since then .

I bought these as I was using the XM3 earbuds which were great but i needed to listen to streamed programmes for long periods without distraction.

Brilliant medium high budget headphones (probably the best pair I’ve bought!). Only reason it wasn’t 5 stars was due to the breathability of the design if you are exercising, & price (but I believe they’ve since had a price reduction).

This is a huge step up from the previous WH1000XM4 in terms of sound quality and noise cancellation. The transparency is also very advanced and in very real time. Very cosy on the ear and a timeless minimal style.
